Honey oak from the 1980s and 1990s takes cabinet painting well, but only after two things happen. The tannin in oak bleeds pink and yellow through a water-based primer, so the first coat has to be a shellac primer that seals it. Then the open grain gets either a grain filler, laid on in a few passes and sanded level, or is left to show through the paint on purpose.
